| Tall, Narrow Building |
 |
|
Composed of photos of all four sides of a building, this Fotomo is a perfectly three-dimensional model viewable from any angle. With limited space available in Tokyo you often come across strangely shaped buildings, but this one was built on an extremely narrow plot of land, so there's only one shape it could be - tall and narrow. And because it's surrounded by roads and vacant land, all four of its walls are in full view. On the walls facing the roads there are brightly colored signs for a real estate brokerage and a moneylending business, providing a stark contrast with the bare wall opposite the vacant lot. Thanks to its singular design, the building stands out as a uniquely striking object. |

The above images show the primary components of this Fotomo. On one side of the building I couldn't stand far enough back to fit the entire wall in the frame with a standard zoom lens, so I mounted a super wide-angle ZUIKO DIGITAL 7-14mm F4 lens on my E-300. |

To accurately reproduce the building's proportions, I corrected the perspective in Adobe® Photoshop®. I had to make some fairly drastic changes to a few of the images, but thanks to the ZUIKO DIGITAL's incredible edge-to-edge sharpness and the E-300's abundant, 8-megapixel image data, there was very little loss in quality. Since I couldn't have made a Fotomo of a building in this kind of location with film, I made the most of what digital technology has to offer. Even though Fotomo itself isn't a digital technique, there's no doubt that applying digital technology opens the door to even more
artistic possibilities. |
