Omoide Yokocho (Memory Lane)
Located in Tokyo's Shinjuku district, "Omoide Yokocho" is a reminder of how the streets looked following reconstruction after the Second World War.
With the old Japanese pubs and bars so cramped together, and the street so narrow and dark, the alley seems a bit sinister and tunnel-like. Nevertheless, it's packed with office workers and revelers night after night.
To recreate this crowded atmosphere in a Fotomo, I took shots every few steps as I walked down the street. I then cut out the center of the photos and joined them together like a concertina. Three-dimensional concertina-type picture books have been around since they appeared in Europe in the 19th century, but I think the realism of Fotomo adds yet another dimension to this technique.
