lympus IPLEX remote visual inspection systems help keep business and industry running worldwide. They're widely used to maintain jet aircraft, power plants, and other heavy machinery, and they have a reputation for being tough, rugged, and hard-working. So we were a bit surprised to hear that an IPLEX-FX was booked on a cruise ship.
But when we put in a call to global cruise operator MSC Cruises, they assured us it was true. And although it didn't turn out to be quite the Caribbean vacation we imagined, their story serves as another excellent example of how captains of industry use IPLEX systems to maintain safety, energy efficiency, and competitiveness.
MSC Cruises is one of the world's leading cruise ship operators, with a fleet that includes some of the largest and most technologically advanced passenger liners afloat today. Since the vessels have to withstand the rigors of the open sea, maintenance is an ongoing, and never-ending, task. That’s where the portable, high-resolution IPLEX-FX system really shines.
And the IPLEX-FX really does shine, with a new series of SmartTip™ interchangeable optical tips that offer built-in LED illumination and advanced stereo imaging for accurate 3D measurement of key components from virtually any angle.
With all the bulkheads and piping aboard a ship, there's no end to the nooks and crannies that need investigating. Fortunately, the portable IPLEX-FX is particularly well-suited to shipboard use. It's got a tough, abrasion-resistant insertion tube and fully articulated flexible probe that enable complex machinery to be inspected without costly and time-consuming disassembly.
Built on a rugged magnesium chassis, the IPLEX-FX also features a transreflective 6.5” LCD monitor for high visibility in daylight, and advanced image processing for superior shadow and highlight detail. But in the engine room, it all boils down to improved safety and energy efficiency, enabling engineers to inspect remote, difficult-to-access areas quickly, and to ensure timely maintenance and cost-effective overhaul scheduling.
As Dr. Emilio La Scala, General Manager of MSC Cruisetech puts it, "Our target is to maintain high standards of efficiency, reliability and security for the entire fleet. Thanks to the videoscope, we can guarantee the ordinary and extraordinary maintenance of our ships, getting substantial economic benefits by avoiding unnecessary detentions and making them targeted, planned and timely." |
